When Shh!t Happens: Helping Craig and His Best Mate
At SHH!T Happens, we know that sometimes life takes turns no one’s prepared for. And while we’re a business, we’ve never been just about what we sell. We’re about showing up when it matters—quietly, practically, and without needing to make it a spectacle.
A few weeks ago, we heard from Craig.
Craig is part of our community, someone who’s been living with a disability and, like many of us, has built a deep and constant bond with his dog. His dachshund, Chucky, wasn’t just a pet. He was Craig’s best mate—his shadow, his confidant, his reason to laugh in quiet moments. They were inseparable.
But then Chucky got sick. Really sick. What followed was a wave of emergency vet visits, frantic phone calls, and mounting bills. Craig did everything right. He fought for his best mate. He stayed up all night. He made sure Chucky was never alone. But in the end, he had to make the hardest decision of all—one no pet parent is ever truly ready for. He had to say goodbye.
And when he did, everything felt still.
Grief isn’t something you can measure, especially when it comes in the shape of a little wagging tail and a warm spot on the couch that’s suddenly empty. For Craig, it was more than sadness. It was silence where there used to be presence. It was loneliness made louder by the loss of the one creature that understood him without needing words.
When we heard what had happened, we didn’t hesitate. Thanks to the support of our customers and community—the people who choose to shop with purpose—we were able to step in. We covered the cost of Chucky’s vet care. It wasn’t a grand gesture. It wasn’t about us. It was about doing something, anything, to take one layer of weight off Craig’s shoulders in a moment when everything already felt too heavy.
But our support didn’t stop there.
Because we also know that the absence left behind by a dog like Chucky never really closes—it just softens over time. And in that space, when the person is ready, a new chapter can begin. That’s why we’re helping Craig welcome a new dachshund puppy into his life. Not as a replacement, because Chucky can’t be replaced, but as a new source of joy, mischief, and love. Because dogs don’t just fill our homes—they fill the parts of ourselves we sometimes forget are even there.
This is what SHH!T Happens is here to do. Every roll of toilet paper you buy helps us keep our impact model alive—whether that means showing up for someone in grief, supplying essentials to those doing it tough, or backing people when things fall apart.
To everyone who’s ever supported us, shared our story, or placed an order: thank you. You made this moment possible. You helped us help Craig.
Rest easy, Chucky. You were deeply, deeply loved. And your impact lives on—in paw prints, in memories, and in the quiet way you changed someone’s life forever.
